To the membership, As many of you know Western Pennsylvania Sportsmen’s Club has been involved in 2 lawsuits over the course of the last 6 years. One was regarding noise with two of our neighbors (which started in 2020) and the other regarding zoning that started in March of 2025. Both are directly related to the Sporting Clay course.
The board of directors, officers, and myself have worked tirelessly with our attorney to come to a resolution with both the neighbors and the municipality. I have personally been involved in this litigation for the last 5 years.
I am happy to report that after many hours of meetings and court dates we have come to an agreement to settle both cases. It is not without some growing pains, but I believe that the agreement will benefit the organization in the long run.
The neighbor has agreed to contribute a significant amount of money to relocate our Sporting Clay course as part of the settlement and the municipality of Murrysville has guaranteed us zoning for our future endeavors. This combined with a donation from the National Rifle Association will enable West Penn to offer a better sporting clay’s course to the membership as well as the NSCA events that we host.
All Trap fields and the 5-Stand are not affected at all.
Unfortunately, we have been directed by a Judge in The Court of Common Pleas to significantly restrict shooting on all westward facing Sporting Clay stations effective June 2nd, 2026, as part of the negotiated settlement until construction of the new course is complete.
Upon completion of the project, we will be able to operate with zero restrictions. All eastward facing stations will be open for business as usual, and we will issue a schedule for the membership for when the entire course will be open.
It is imperative that we all abide by this agreement to eliminate any future legal issues.
Estimated completion of construction is December 2026, weather permitting.
I personally want to thank every one of you for your patience and understanding while we navigate this settlement.
I also want to thank our officers and board of directors; we could not have achieved this without your dedication, time, and participation.
It is my hope that by Spring of 2027 this issue will be a distant memory and we have a new course to shoot without any risk of future lawsuits.
Very respectfully, Matthew J Patterson, President WPSC
